runDisney Family Fun Run 5K Recap

When the morning of the Family Fun Run 5K arrived, I was SO excited. This was the first runDisney 5K I have participated in and the Pluto medal was super cute!

The alarm went off at 3:45. Talk about a shocker! It's been a long time since I've gotten up that early. The weather was a little chilly, so I opted to wear my new RunningSkirts long sleeve tech tee with my SparkleSkirt. Most people that participate in runDisney events have his/her costume picked out for weeks, maybe even months. But not me, I threw a random collection of skirts and shirts in my suitcase. So I was happy with how my outfit came together.
I stayed offsite for this race and arriving to the event was SUPER easy. No lines to get into the Epcot parking lot. We left a little earlier than normal since we were expecting traffic, but since there wasn't any my friend LeeAnn and I opted to hang out in the warm car for a little bit longer.

Getting into the race area and corrals was easy. I was surprised by how many kids there were. It was cool to see all the families and the excitement of the kids! Before we knew it, the clock struck a quarter past six and it was time to run! And of course, a runDisney race wouldn't be complete without fireworks at the start!
I'll admit when it came to actually running this race I was a little nervous. I hadn't run in almost 5 weeks because of my stress fracture. My only goal was to finish without injuring my foot further. I ended up hanging with LeeAnn and Linsday, both fellow Pacebook Running Club members. And shockingly enough, we pretty much ran the entire race....minus stopping for character pictures and water. I have never run an entire 3.1 miles without stopping. Guess I was more worried that if I stopped for intervals, the pain in my foot be too much to bear each time. So I just ran. And it worked!

One thing I loved about this race was running through Epcot around the World Showcase. Besides running through parts of Epcot at other runDisney races, I have never been to Epcot. So getting to this section of the park was exciting for me. There was so much to see!

We stopped for a few character pictures and the craziest thing of all was the line for a picture with Dopey. I can honestly say this was the longest character line I've seen at a race.
And did we wait in it?? Heck yeah! But did we stay in it?? Heck no! At some point while waiting in the never moving line, we saw golf carts with flashing lights on the horizon. We all freaked out thinking they were starting to close the course, so we high tailed it out of there. Turns out, we were wrong and we never did get a picture with Dopey. I wish I would have taken more pictures. I was just trying hard to concentrate on my foot and before I knew it the race was almost over.

Toward the end of the race, it started sprinkling. I'm like a cat when it comes to getting wet, so I wasn't thrilled about the rain. We stopped for one last picture before heading to the finish line.
And of course I had to reward myself with some coffee after the race. These two together are like the perfect pair!
The runDisney Family Fun Run 5K was a great race! If you're looking to run your first 5K or to run with your whole family, this would be the perfect race.

Have you ever run a runDisney 5k? What are your thoughts?

  1. Great job! We are going to run that entire upcoming 10k too! (between photo stops that is!)

  2. I am so glad your foot held up! Yay!! I've run one other Disney 5K, the Royal Family in 2012. So much fun!! It's killing me how long that dopey line was!!

  3. WOW. I can't believe that line for Dopey! I'm guessing there were a lot of kids in it?

Glad your foot is getting better!

  4. That medal is so cute!! Doesn't coffee always make everything better??? :) I've never done any Disney races, I'm waiting for my daughter to turn 5 before I do any.

  5. I bet the line to take a photo with Dopey was really long because of all the people doing the 48.6 mi Dopey Challenge throughout the weekend. I read that 10,000 people did the 5K and 7,000 of them were registered for Dopey!
